What to Do if You Have No Interview by December?

If you haven’t received any residency interview invites by December, it can be a frustrating and stressful time. However, it’s important to remember that the MATCH process is highly competitive and that there are still options available to improve your chances. Here are a few things you can do to enhance your CV, experiences and Step 3 to increase your chances of getting an invite.

1. Improve Your CV: Take a close look at your CV and see if there are any areas that can be improved. Make sure it’s well-organized, easy to read and includes all relevant information. Highlight any unique experiences or achievements.

2. Get More Clinical Experience: The more clinical experience you have, the more competitive you’ll be as a candidate. Consider taking on additional rotations or volunteering at a clinic or hospital. This will give you the opportunity to gain more hands-on experience and make connections in the medical community.

3. Prepare for Step 3: If you haven’t taken Step 3 yet, make sure you’re well-prepared for the exam. This test is a requirement for most residency programs, so it’s important to do well. Consider taking a review course or working with a tutor to help you study.

4. Network: Building relationships with program directors and residents can be extremely helpful in the match process. Attend conferences, reach out to alumni, and connect with other medical students who have matched successfully.

5. Consider Alternative Pathways: If you haven’t received an invite by December, it may be worth exploring alternative pathways to a residency. Consider research positions, volunteering, or even taking a gap year to gain more experience.

While it can be difficult and nerve-wracking for the MATCH candidate if they are not able to receive an invite by December, it’s important to remember that there are still options available. By taking steps to improve your CV, experiences and Step 3, you can increase your chances of getting an invite. Remember to stay positive and keep working hard, as persistence often pays off in the end.
