In the sport of cricket, different pitch restrictions are imposed depending on the type of match. Certain bowling tactics are used to discourage or dare the batsman to hit big shots, allowing them to hit four sixes and fours. Each team has nine players apart from the wicket-keeper and bowler. The captain decides the field positions after consulting the bowler. In Test cricket matches, the pitch restrictions are relaxed compared to One Day International.

This is to prevent the use of illegal and controversial body tactics. There is no player on or off the field until the batsman has a chance to play the ball.

A number of rules have been applied throughout the history of one-day cricket with the dual purpose of encouraging the batsman to play attacking shots and to prevent the fielding team from being too defensive by putting all their players on the boundary. The One Day International rules were first introduced in July 2001 as Test rules and are also used in other limited-overs tournaments.

An oval will be made by drawing two half circles on the playing field. The semi-circles will have a center post on either side of the court. The radius of each semicircle will be 30 meters (27 m). The semicircles will be connected by lines drawn parallel to the pitch. This line is known as a circle. In addition, two circles drawn and compasses marked on each wicket within a radius of 15 yards (14 m) are combined in an area known as the infield. In the first 10 overs of 50-over innings, a maximum of two players may be fielded. Prior to July 2015, at least two fielders (other than the bowler and the wicketkeeper) had to be deployed in the near field in Powerplay 1.

If the number of overs of the innings is limited to less than 24, the length of pitch reductions is reduced to eight or nine overs. At least 3 players must be on the Off or Leg side.

How To Play Cricket

This was shortened to t overs in 2005 and two five-over powerplays were introduced, with the bowling team having discretion over the timing of both. In 2008, the batting lineup was given discretion over the timing of one of the two power plays. In 2011, teams were limited to completing discretionary power plays between rounds 16 and 40; previously, powerplays could be played anytime between the 11th and 50th overs.

On 30 October 2012, the ICC officially introduced changes to the rules regarding playing restrictions in one-day matches. The number of powerplay blocks has been reduced to two; the first occurs in the first 10 overs, limiting the team to two pitches outside the 30-yard circle. The second block, Batting Powerplay with a reduction of three players outside the circle, must take place before the 40th over.

The number of players outside the 30m circle has also been reduced to four (from five) in non-Powerplays.

In June 2015, the rules were changed to remove the batting powerplay, allowing 5 bowlers outside the circle in the last 10 overs. The 2015 rule changes also included the elimination of the batting power play.

The number of fielders is the same as in the One Day format, but the reduction lasts for the first six of the twenty overs and there are no ‘Batting’ or ‘Bowling’ Powerplays (2nd and 3rd ODI Powerplays).
