Cricket Pads – Pads (also known as shin guards) are a type of protective equipment used in some sports to protect the legs from the impact of a hard ball, puck, or other high-speed traveling object that could otherwise cause shin injuries. They are used by batters in the sport of cricket, catchers in the sports of baseball and fastpitch softball, and goalies in sports such as ice hockey, ringette, bandy, rinkball, field hockey, rink hockey, and lacrosse.

In cricket, pads are divided into two types, batting balls and wicket pads. In Test and first-class cricket, the blocks are white (to match the rest of the player’s white), and in limited-overs cricket they may be coloured.

Cricket pads first appeared in England in the mid-18th century. They were developed to protect the lower legs from the hard leather ball used to deliver the ball in the game. This was in response to the gradual evolution from arm to arm and eventually overarm bowling, which put the batsman’s knees and shins at risk.

The development of pads led to changes in the laws of cricket and the addition of the dismissal of LBVs. It was introduced in 1774 because batsmen started using their pads to bounce balls off their wickets.

Impact pads protect the shins, knees and lower thighs. It is basically a slot for the foot. Traditional plots were made of canvas with cotton filling between sewn cane strips that went up vertically up to the knee roll. The material would be colored white with water soluble canvas paint. Leather clips were used to attach the pads to the leg. These natural material pads were quite heavy. Batting pads are just one of several layers of protection worn by today’s cricketers while batting. Other leg pads include a special knee pad to protect the knees or a thigh pad to protect the upper leg. In the professional game, players often insert extra pads under their pads to limit the impact of fast deliveries that can travel 80 to 100 miles per hour (130 to 160 km/h).

At first, goalkeepers used kicking pads to protect their legs, but found that knee pads hindered their agility and catching ability. There have also been incidents where the ball has stopped in the space between the wing and the goalkeeper’s foot. This is why modern goalie pads are smaller than bats, with negligible knee pads.
